New Eco House in Sussex

An exciting new eco house in sussex has just been completed by Nicholas Pople Architects. The project includes a wood chip burner, solar panels, it’s own water source, low energy lighting and materials with a high thermal mass. The original structure of the building was used to minimise the carbon footprint. The clever design makes the most of the views towards the South Downs with side windows punched out of the walls to gather extra light and provide views into the back rooms.

Hospital in Weston for Coda Architects

A shoot for Coda Architects last week at the Weston General Hospital in Weston-Super-Mare. It was good to make the most out of the glorious weather and finish off the exteriors after doing the inside earlier last year.  Great to use my new manfrotto junior geared head as well, why haven’t I been using that for the last 7 years!!

Fun photoshoot in a quarry

I had a very fun day this week shooting some images for a local charity with Cemex. I got to go into one of the countries biggest quarries near to Luton.  Big dumper trucks, hot sun, friendly clients…..

In The Suburbs – photo project

I’m still taking photos as part of my investigation into photography and it’s representation of the suburbs. Since moving out of London some 6 years ago (to a town in Hertfordshire about half an hour away) – I have always struggled with living back in the type of town I grew up in.

The city is an easy subject to photograph, its spectacle lends itself to the photographer. The bright lights, the culture, its 24 hour nature. But the town shuts up at night, the houses look different, the routes in and out of the nearest city become important. It’s a place to live but not a destination to go to, there is no grand spectacle.

I shot this photo this morning. The view is a suburban house, framed by a hedge (another suburban signifier), the view and its framing is both an attraction to a certain life and a barrier to it in the form of a hedge. It makes me think about my dual approach to where I live and where I might prefer to be and also makes me think about the photographs ability to represent and it’s own barrier to an unmediated reality.

Anthony Caro exhibition Canary Wharf

I shot the new Anthony Caro exhibition at Canary Wharf today on behalf of Canary Wharf Arts and Events. A lovely sunny spring day. Caro has always been one of my favourite sculptors. I can’t say why, I know so little about the medium and everything about his work is just an aesthetic reaction but the weight of his work and it’s simplicity really appeals. Maybe it’s because I relate it in my mind to something very modernist, it always feels to be about the industrial past with it’s heavy steel structures, the same reason I like Richard Serra so much. The work works well against the shiny corporate towers of Canary Wharf, a counterbalance to the service society taking place in the offices all about, reminding us of the Docklands heritage.
